How to Set Up Google Chat Notifications

Connect a Google Chat Space so public recognitions and one-off program completions appear where your team already collaborates.

Who can use this feature

Available on the Starter plan and above.

Who this is for

Admins with global admin access.

What you'll achieve

A Google Chat Space that receives card notifications when:

  • Someone gives a public recognition

  • An admin executes a one-off program with Program visibility turned on

Before you begin

  • [ ] You have global admin permissions in PraisePal

  • [ ] You can manage webhooks in the target Google Chat Space

  • [ ] You know which Space should receive team-wide recognition and program announcements

Enable the Google Chat integration under Settings β†’ Integrations.

Steps

Create the incoming webhook in Google Chat

  1. In your Space, next to the space title, click β–Ό β†’ Manage webhooks.

  2. If the space already has other webhooks, click Add another. Otherwise, skip this step.

  3. For Name, enter PraisePal (or another name you prefer). For Avatar URL, you can use the PraisePal logo URL shown in the integration flow in the app.

  4. Copy the webhook URL Google Chat generates.

Connect the webhook in PraisePal

  1. Paste the webhook URL into your PraisePal workspace's Google Chat integration and save.

What gets posted

Public recognitions

When someone gives a public recognition, PraisePal posts a card to your Space with:

  • The giver's name and avatar in the header

  • Recipients, points, message, and any company value hashtag

  • A View in PraisePal button that opens the recognition

Private recognitions are never posted to Google Chat. Recipients still receive email and Slack direct messages (when configured) as usual.

One-off program completions

When an admin executes a one-off program with Program visibility enabled, PraisePal posts a card summarizing:

  • The program name and workspace logo in the header

  • Recipients and points each person received

  • The program message, when one was included

There is no action button on one-off cards.

If Program visibility is off, the completion is not posted to Google Chat (or Slack broadcast, when configured). Recipients still receive email, Slack DMs, and generic webhooks as configured.

What is not sent

Comments on recognitions are not sent to Google Chat. Only the events above use this integration.

Common mistakes

Private recognitions aren't appearing in the Space β€” Only public recognitions are broadcast. Private recognitions are intentionally excluded from Google Chat, the same as Slack broadcast channels.

One-off program completions aren't appearing β€” Check that Program visibility was enabled when the program was created. One-off Google Chat cards only send when the program is published to the Home feed. Email and Slack DMs to recipients are unaffected.

Nothing is posting after saving the webhook URL β€” Confirm the webhook URL was copied completely from Google Chat and saved on the Integrations page. If the URL is invalid or the webhook was removed in Google Chat, PraisePal skips delivery silently.
